Maryland Lead Regulations

The Maryland Lead Law became effective on February 24, 1996. It aims to prevent and reduce lead poisoning in children. This law only applies to rental homes built before 1978. Homes with a lead-free certificate are exempt.

Maryland Department of the Environment enforces the law. MDE ensures landlords are complying with taking certain measures. These measures reduce lead poisoning in children. Lead poisoning has been declining since the law became effective.
