Maryland Lead Regulations
The Maryland Lead Law became effective on February 24, 1996. It aims to prevent and reduce lead poisoning in children. This law only applies to rental homes built before 1978. Homes with a lead-free certificate are exempt.
Maryland Department of the Environment enforces the law. MDE ensures landlords are complying with taking certain measures. These measures reduce lead poisoning in children. Lead poisoning has been declining since the law became effective.
Requirements of the law include:
- Registering the rental property with MDE
- Renewing it by December 31st each year
- Getting a lead inspection before any new tenants move in
- Only hiring accredited lead inspectors to do the lead inspections
- Providing the lead certificate to tenants
- Distributing the following materials to new tenants every two years if the tenant remains for 2+ years.
