Dust Sampling

Dust wipe tests measure lead dust on horizontal surfaces. Dust tests cannot be used to determine the presence of lead-based paint. They show whether there are lead particles in household dust. Dust samplings are taken after any work has been completed and the work areas have been cleaned. Dust wipe samples are collected from floors, windowsills, and window wells. Ensure your property is ready for the lead dust inspection by reviewing Preparing for Your Lead Inspection.
Soil Sampling

When testing for lead contamination in soil, samples are typically collected from areas where bare soil is exposed. This is soil that is not covered by grass, mulch, or concrete. Soil is collected from key locations around the property including:
When testing for lead contamination in soil, samples are typically collected from areas where bare soil is exposed. This is soil that is not covered by grass, mulch, or concrete. Soil is collected from key locations around the property including:
- Dripline/Foundation Area: The dripline is the area directly beneath the edges of a building's roof, where rainwater and runoff naturally fall to the ground.
- Play Area: In areas where children play, bare soil is also sampled for lead, as children are more vulnerable to lead exposure through direct contact with soil. Children are at greater risk of ingesting lead-contaminated soil or dust when they play outdoors, making this an essential area for testing. Samples collected here are crucial for assessing the safety of the space and ensuring that lead levels are within acceptable limits for children's exposure.
XRF Inspection

Portable XRF lead-based paint analyzers are the most common primary analytical method for inspections in housing because of the demonstrated ability to determine if lead-based paint is present on many surfaces and to measure the paint without destroying the paint. The XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) Analyzer measures the intensity of the fluorescent light and displays the amount of lead. The XRF is primarily used for "lead-free" inspections. For single family homes, every room is inspected with the XRF analyzer.
Visual Inspection

After the work has been done, a visual inspection is completed to ensure there is no flaking, chipping, cracking, or peeling paint and that the work areas were sufficiently cleaned and no debris remains on the floor. Photos are taken to document the repairs were completed. Ensure your property is ready to be inspected by reviewing Preparing for Your Lead Inspection.
